Across Europe, many early-stage researchers still face uncertain career paths, limited opportunities beyond academia, and institutions that struggle to keep pace with fast-moving technological and societal needs. INSIGHT was created to tackle this challenge by helping universities, industry and public organisations work together to build what we call talent ecosystems; that is: environments where researchers can grow, connect and contribute with real impact.
Building such ecosystems means strengthening the conditions around researchers as much as supporting the researchers themselves. Institutions begin to rethink how they recruit, train and mentor talent. Teams experiment with new ways of linking technical skills to human centred practices. Partners from industry and the public sector become part of the learning process rather than occasional end users. As these ingredients come together, career pathways that once felt fragmented start to look more coherent, with clearer opportunities for mobility, collaboration and professional growth.
Much of the work happens in real settings where researchers and external partners tackle practical challenges, from digital transformation to emerging manufacturing technologies. These interactions help researchers develop confidence, applied skills and a stronger sense of how their expertise fits into wider systems. They also help organisations understand what researchers actually need in order to thrive and contribute meaningfully.
What emerges is not a single model but a shared way of thinking about research careers in Europe. It is a shift toward environments that are more supportive, more connected and more responsive to societal change. This is the ambition guiding INSIGHT and the direction that Europe needs if it wants its research talent to flourish.
